This is an instructional to make a 16″ infant headband, the size can be easily adjusted by using longer lengths of ribbon, or a longer piece of elastic
14″ long piece of thin cardboard/cardstock cut to the width of your preference. In this example I used a 1/2″ wide strip of scrapboook cardstock .
28″-35″ length of 1/4″ or 3/8″ ribbon x 4
(the shorter lengths would be needed for the 3/8″ ribbon and thinner the ribbon the longer lengths that you would need)
2 1/4″ piece of elastic
doublestick tape
lighter to heat seal the ribbon ends
needle and thread
Apply double stick tape to the strip of cardstock, starting approx 1/2″ from the top and ending 1/2″ before you reach the bottom, this will make it easier to sew through the cardstock.
Attach the lengths of ribbon to the strip keeping in mind the order that you want the colors to be weaved. There will be 2 lengths of ribbon on each side of the strip, one in front and one in back. The inside diamond colors will be the rear left color (pink), and the front right color (black). The outside triangle colors will be the front left color (pink with white swiss dots) and the rear right color (white with black swiss dots). Secure temporarily with a straight pin or safety pin.
This is the order of the 4-step weave
wrap front right ribbon around the back
wrap rear right ribbon around the front
wrap rear left ribbon from back to front
wrap front left ribbon around back being careful to weave ribbon under the front right ribbon the you just wrapped around.
The lengths of ribbon should have switched places, again having 2 pieces on each side, one in back and one in front.
Continue this weave all the way down the strip until you reach the end, tightening the ribbon as you go and rubbing to adhere to the double stick tape.
When you get to the end secure temporarily with a straight pin or safety pin.
Tuck the elastic into the weave, being sure to hold the ribbon tightly so as not to unweave it. And secure with stitching, either hand or machine.
Trim and heat seal the ends.
Bring the elastic around to the other side and repeat; tuck, secure, trim and seal, being sure not to twist the strip and form a complete circle.
Cut 2 1 3/4″ pieces of the trimmed ribbon and heat seal the ends. Apply glue to the back side of each piece and wrap around the ends where you joined the weave to the elastic hiding the ends of the ribbon and the stitches.
Here is your Woven Infant headband. You can slip any bows or korkers, attached to a partialluy lined alligator clip, under one of the diamonds in the weave to make it an interchangeable headband.
