If you do not have adequate space for a vegetable garden, consider growing them in containers. Here is an example. Easy and low cost. Can be a fun and quick way to introduce a beginner to vegetable gardening.

In the sunniest spot available (the example is in zone 5b), place the containers (recycled 2 gallon knockout rose container) in rows. Fill container with compost (get free compost here if you live in Chicago). Lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and pole beans are good choices: high yield and easy for beginners.

Use bamboo sticks to build trellises for vine vegetables. Four pots as a group, one stick in each pot. Cross them at the top and tie together where they intersect.

Lay a stick on top of every two groups, leaving the ends sticking out. Tie where the sticks intersect. The owner used this set up to grow cucumbers in her backyard in Windy City for more than 10 years, This creates a sturdy wall that’s never been blown over.
