We’ve taken note of a number of 1-star reviews on our Garlic Chive Seeds page, with comments like ‘No germination at all’. To address this, we’ve provided a germination test below outlining the essential steps for achieving successful germination.
8/9/2023. Soak the seeds for approximately 10 hours. Afterward, enclose them in a damp paper towel and place them within a sealed ziplock bag, ensuring to remove excess air. Then, find a suitable dark location, such as a cabinet or a bowl covered with a plate, to let the seeds rest. This is important because garlic chive seeds require darkness to germinate. Our room temperature was 77°F.
8/13/2023. Out of 109 seeds, 74 have sprouted. Gently transfer these sprouted seeds to seed pots containing seed starting mix or potting mix. Add a light layer of soil to cover them. Place a plastic bag over the pot to retain moisture, and then set the pot in a dark spot. To ensure clear visibility of the progress, we’ve placed the sprouted seeds on a damp paper towel rather than in soil.
8/16/23 night. The sprouted seeds developed tiny leaves. The leaves are yellow since they were kept in dark. Also 10 more seeds have sprouted.
8/17/23 morning. The bowl (covered with bag) was left on the counter. The leaves turned green the next morning. Transplants need 6-8 weeks of growth before planting in the garden, after last frost. Starting with transplants is generally recommended as it will give you bigger plants faster.
