The ribbon or fabric key fobs normally require sewing webbing and fabric/ribbon together. If you sell your key fob, it’s the best way to make them.
My son wanted to make several key fobs for friends. Obviously, he can’t sew. So I thought of a “no sew” way. This is an easy project for kids.
What we need:
Webbing and printed ribbon. In this tutorial, we are using 1.25″ polyester webbing and 7/8″ ribbon.
Double sided tape. I have 1/4″ tape handy so I use 2 stripes of 1/4″ tape to stick ribbon and webbing together. If you have 5/8″ tape, it’ll be easier.
Soft jaw running pliers are perfect for squeezing the mouth of key fob hardware.
Scissors.
1. Cut webbing and ribbon to 10″. Cut 2 strips of double sided tape to 10″. Peel off one side of backing, stick them on webbing, then peel off the other side of backing, stick ribbon on to webbing. Press to make sure the ribbon is smooth. Heat seal both ribbon ends.
2. Fold the webbing in half, line up the end of the webbing in your key fob hardware tip.
3. Squeeze tip closed with running pliers. The nylon jaw of the pliers will protect the metal from being scratched. Make sure to clamp down each end securely.
4. Ready to use!
How well the double sided tape hold the webbing and ribbon? The image below is the same key fob after 4 months in use (never washed it though). Still looks good.
