In last year’s experiments, we found out that the Usui pea is cultivated for its delicious and tender pea shoots. This variety produces large leaves with few tendrils. Makes them tender, crisp and tasty. Usui pea seeds can be purchased on Amazon. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
This year, we started in Spring. We want to answer a frequently asked question: how many usui pea seeds do I need to produce enough pea shoot/tips?
To grow pea shoots as a micro green, a lot of pea seeds are needed. Pea shoots are harvested after the seeds sprouted and about 8-10″ long. Let it grow the second batch of shoots. Cut the shoots and the seeds are discarded.
To grow pea tips, we just let the plants grow big and harvest the tip of the vine. Check out the density of the pea seeds needed:
Here is a pea plant about 70 days after sowing. We pick the top tender tip. After 5-8 days, 3 more new growth pea tips will be ready to harvest.
Let’s check out the yield from around 100 Usui pea seeds. The pea seeds were planted in two City Pickers Planters above. 4oz is considered enough for a meal (Wholefoods Market sells pea shoots in 4.2oz container).

Normally, peas are considered as cool weather crops. We sow the seeds in March, harvest the pea pods in 60-70 days then remove the plants for warm weather crops. Now we grown pea plants for pea shoots instead of for pods. Seems that the pea plants likes warm weather (in zone 5). Hopefully we’re able to harvest pea tips all season long. The next update will be in Fall.
